Building Regulations for Stairs

Domestic stairs have limits on rise, going, pitch and headroom, plus rules on spindle gaps for child safety. Loft stairs get some flexibility but still need signing off. We work to the regulations from the start rather than fixing problems at inspection.

Balustrades, Handrails and Spindles

The balustrade changes how a staircase looks more than the treads do. Timber spindles, glass panels and metal balusters all fit the same frame. Handrail height is set by regulations. We can match existing joinery if you are replacing one flight in an older house.

Can you replace a staircase in an occupied Hove house?

Yes. Most replacements take two to three days, and we usually keep temporary access upstairs overnight. The old flight comes out, the opening is checked against the new stair, then the flight is fitted, with balustrade and finishing to follow.

How long does staircase installation take?

Allow four to six weeks from measuring to fitting, because the stair is made to your figures. Fitting itself is two to three days for a straight flight and longer with winders or a landing balustrade. We give you both dates when we quote.

Do loft conversion stairs need to meet the same rules?

Mostly yes, though loft stairs get some allowance for space saving designs where there is no alternative. Headroom, pitch and a safe balustrade still apply, and building control will check them. We design the flight alongside the conversion so it passes first time.
