Door Fitting in Hove

Door fitting in Hove for internal, external and fire doors. Frames in older houses are rarely square, so we plane, pack and hang until the gap is even and the door closes cleanly first time, every time.

Hanging a Door in an Old Frame

In a house that has settled, the frame is often out of square by several millimetres. We check the opening, plane the door to follow it and shim the hinges so the gap stays even. Fitting a standard door without doing this is why doors bind in winter.

More Information

External Doors and Weather Sealing

An external door has to keep out wind and water as well as look right. We check the threshold, fit compression seals and set the door so it pulls tight against them when locked. On a coastal property the seal matters as much as the door itself.

Fire Doors and Safety

Fire doors only work if they are fitted correctly. The gap around the door has to be within tolerance, the intumescent strips intact, and the hinges and closer rated for the door. In flats and rented homes this is a legal requirement, not an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does door fitting take in Hove?

An internal door takes around two hours including the ironmongery. A door with a new frame takes half a day. External doors take longer because of the threshold and weather seals. Most houses can have several doors hung in a single visit.

Why does my door stick in winter?

Timber takes on moisture in damp weather and swells, so a door with a tight gap will bind. The fix is to set the correct clearance rather than plane it back hard, which leaves a wide gap in summer. We adjust the hinges and ease the edges where needed.

Do you supply the doors as well as fit them?

Yes, or you can buy your own and we will hang them. If you are supplying, check the size against the opening first, as older houses often need a larger door cut down. Send us the measurements and we will tell you what to order.
