Alcove Units and Shelving in Hove

Alcove units and shelving in Hove for the recesses either side of a chimney breast. They are almost never the same width or square, so each side is measured separately and each unit is scribed in.

Why Alcoves Are Never Square

Chimney breasts were built by hand and plastered over, so the two recesses usually differ in width and the walls lean. We take three measurements per alcove, at top, middle and bottom, build to the smallest, then scribe the edges to the wall.

Cupboards Below, Shelves Above

The most useful layout is closed storage at the bottom and open shelving above. It hides the clutter and keeps books and pictures on display. Cupboard height is usually set to line up with the mantel or the picture rail.

Shelf Depth and Strength

A shelf that sags is either too thin or unsupported in the middle. For books we use thicker material and keep spans under about 80cm, or add a hidden support. Depth is matched to what goes on the shelf rather than to the full alcove.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do alcove units take to build and fit?

Around three weeks from measuring to fitting, with fitting taking a day for a pair of alcoves. If they are painted on site, allow an extra two days for filling, sanding and coats. We can also supply them primed for your own decorator.

Can you build around a live fireplace?

Yes, with clearances kept to the appliance instructions. Timber has to stay a safe distance from a working stove or open fire, and hearth rules apply. We check the appliance details first and set the units back accordingly.

Should alcove shelving be painted or natural timber?

Painted units in the same colour as the walls make a small room feel larger, because the shelving recedes. Natural timber stands out and suits a room with other wood features. Both are equally durable, so it is a look rather than a performance choice.
